Math for 5th and 6th Grade

Hello everyone, and welcome to Mr. Moe's Math classes. 

 

     

     I am a lifelong learner who is passionate about helping others to become better teachers, and better learners. My goal as a teacher is to pass along the knowledge, methods, and enthusiasm that have been bestowed upon me by others. I began my career in education as a Special Education Pareducator, which allowed me to learn and implement a broad range of interventions and teaching methodoligies. I carried that experience with me as I became a licensed teacher. My experiences with professional development and classroom instruction have allowed me to continually improve so that I can have a positive impact on how students are educated. 

     My family and I are originally from Oregon, where we learned to enjoy the outdoors and to appreciate how everything is connected. All of us are dependent on the caring and kindness of others. I try to make sure that I am caring for every student in order to help them all be able to achieve their goals, and become capable adults who will positively impact their community. 

     My teaching career began in western Kansas, where I was fortunate enough to live in a community of immigrants. The majority of the families that I served were Hispanic, and came to the U.S. in order to build better lives for their children. I also served a number of families from African nations and Southeast Asia who also came to the U.S. to build better and safer lives. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to learn about so many different cultures, and look forward to learning about your families, and more about the history of Cincinnati.

Weekly Schedule for Hybrid Learning

 

Every student in grades 5-8 is either on the RED team or the YELLOW team. If you have siblings in these grades, they should be on the SAME team! Please call the office or email me at kmoe@phoenixclc.org if students from the same family are not on the same team! The following is the hybrid learning schedule for the remainder of the year.

I can fluently add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators.

I can interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, create a story context for (2/3) ÷ (3/4) and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient; use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (2/3) ÷ (3/4) = 8/9 because 3/4 of 8/9 is 2/3. (In general, (a/b) ÷ (c/d) = ad/bc.)

Winter Break

December 18th, 2020

 

Dear 5th and 6th Grade Family,

As the holiday break is approaching, I want to remind you of the importance of studying while on the break.  Please encourage your child to sign in everyday, appropriate behaviors to have while in the classroom, the importance of completing all assignments on time, and encourage them to always ask questions. 

For the holiday break, I’ve uploaded a Multi- Chapter review on Study Island; www.studyisland.com. Students have the entire break to finish the assignment. They will be graded on the percentage that they receive on the assignment. Students may take the assignment as many times as they need to receive the best grade. The assignment is meant to refresh students on everything we have learned so far this school year. 

As always, please do not hesitate to send me an email with any questions or concerns. Thank you for allowing us to educate your child at Phoenix Community Learning Center! Have a safe holiday break!
