Third Grade A ELA

Course Description

Welcome to Third Grade 2019-2020

Dear Parents,

Welcome to your child's third grade year at Phoenix Community Learning Center. I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year. Even though third grade can be a challenge, it is a year of tremendous social and academic growth. Instruction in all academic areas will follow the standards established by the state of Ohio.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Amplify CKLA is our reading curriculum chosen by Phoenix Community Learning Center.  Amplify CKLA is based on a whole group/small group daily participation plan. Whole group learning opportunities occur daily with the introduction of key focus points.  The students will then practice these key focus points during the week independently and in small groups while guided reading groups take place with the teacher.  Independent/small group practice will include fluency, spelling, phonics, and phonemic awareness skills.

Amplify CKLA also cross teaches into our science and social studies curriculum with the addition of appropriate topics and real photographs.

MATH

My Math is our math curriculum for grades K-8.  The My Math program offers students a broad background in math.  My Math is a completely consumable program where each student interacts with the text in multiple ways throughout the learning cycle.  My Math is written to meet the Common Core State Standards.

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES

In both subject areas, students will have several projects to work on during the school year. You will be given very thorough information regarding these projects. If at any time you have a question about these projects, please don't hesitate to ask!

HOMEWORK

Homework will be assigned on a daily basis, and will be due the following day. Assigned projects will have a longer due date and may take several weeks to complete. In addition to reinforcing skills learned at school, homework provides you, the parent, the opportunity to stay informed about what your child is studying. (Homework assignments must be in the student's handwriting.)

TAKE HOME FOLDERS

Each night, your child will take home a “Take Home Folder”. One pocket of this folder will be designated for class papers, graded papers, and papers from the office to “Keep at Home”. The other pocket will be labeled “Return to School” and will be for homework, notes to or from me, or things that need to be signed. This includes homework, notes, or permission slips. I do not use Friday Folders, therefore graded work will be placed in this folder.

I am looking forward to working together to make your child’s third grade year a success. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Enthusiastically,

Mrs. McCoy

Dear Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed a nice, relaxing weekend!  We are entering Week 9 of remote learning.  Last week, we began having daily Zoom meetings with breakout sessions where we worked in small groups with Ms. Bennington and Ms. Conaway.  I am looking forward to seeing more of you on there next week.  This week our lessons in Zoom will be a mixture of Khan Academy, Brain Pop, and Study Island for ELA Instruction.  Zoom instruction provides an excellent opportunity for helping to keep skills sharp.  I highly recommend attending!

ELA and Math assignments for online learning will be on ReadWorks and ALEKS.  Please refer to the specific assignment pages for daily review and weekly work packets.  All assignments are due by the end of the day on Fridays.

If you need anything at all, please feel free to reach out to me on my phone or email kmccoy@phoenixclc.org.  I want you to know that I am here and we will continue to get through this!  Hang in there!  Have a great week!

Week of 5/4/20-5/8/20

Dear Families of 3A,
I really enjoyed hearing from a lot of you this past week. I hope everyone is doing their best to stay safe and well during this difficult time. It’s so important to try to stay on a consistent schedule with your class assignments. Please set aside time for learning to take place. This week we are beginning online Zoom meetings. Meetings will take place Monday-Friday from 1-2 pm. I will provide instruction for ELA and Math lessons on Zoom and daily online assignments will correspond with our live meetings. This will take place for the remainder of the school year. An invitation to join our meetings can be found in your child’s email account. If you need that information, please feel free to let me know. I truly feel that this will benefit your child by attending the meetings, as well as, provide the opportunity to interact with their peers and I in a virtual setting! I am eager to get started with this and “seeing” all of you.
Breakfast and lunch will continue to be served throughout the week from 9:00-12 noon. Work packets are distributed on Fridays at the same time. This includes work for the following week. These Zoom classes and paper packets are designed to help students stay on target with Ohio ELA standards. There is always an option to complete online assignments if you do not have transportation to get the packets.
As always, I am available to help you with anything you may need to help your child continue to be successful. You can reach me on my cell phone or email: kmccoy@phoenixclc.org.
