Course Description

Welcome! Welcome! Welcome, seventh grade mathematicians!
 
Are you ready for some analyzing proportional relationships? Operations with fractions? Generating equivalent expressions using properties of operations? Using numerical and algebraic expressions to solve real-world equations? Drawing, constructing, and describing geometrical figures? Measuring angles, area, surface area, and volume? Random sampling and informal inferences? Predicting, determining, and describing chance processes and probability models?
 
No? Well, make sure your Starbucks cup lid is securely fastened because you're in for an amazing year!

Grade Updates/Make-Up Work

Please check your math Google Sheet (shared with student and parent), Google Classroom, and Thinkwave gradebook periodically. Any and all Qtr 2 make-up work is due no later than Friday, January 15, 2021.
 
Please be sure you are progressing on completing your Qtr 2 project.

I will Update Grades this Weekend

This weekend, I will

     1. score make-up work (any assignments that were due before this week),
     2. score current work (any assignments due this week),
     3. update Google Classroom,
     4. update Thinkwave, and
     5. update spreadsheets.
 
Be sure you have completed all work before Saturday (12/19/20)morning.

Please do not "resubmit" assignments from Q1. I am definitely NOT rescoring any of those assignments. When you submit assignments for Q2, be sure they are not blank. If you are submitting blank assignments, I may begin taking points off of your overall grade for wasting my time. (I actually LOOK at the work to determine the quality of work you've submitted.)
 
I beg you to complete any and all make-up work to help improve your grade. I have reactivated all assignments for Q2 except Exit Tickets (not available for make-ups). Always do your best work to earn a HQW. Don't forget, you can text me at the number listed at the bottom of the welcome letter on my teacher webpage for a faster response than on Google Classroom or email.

I have shared a document with all 7th & 8th grade math students that includes a link to each website as well as usernames and passwords. Students should

Gift Card Incentive

Students will earn a chance to enter a raffle for $5 gift cards. Raffle drawings will be held on Fridays beginning October 2, 2020. Winners will be notified by email. Students will earn a raffle ticket for each of the following:
--Being in class each day and on time (or early).
--Having your face visible on the screen for the entire lesson (unless otherwise instructed).
--Actively participating in class.
--Completing classwork and homework assignments (following all instructions) by the due date.
--Working cooperatively with your Cohort. (See Cohort Selection assignment in Google Classroom)
 
Students should fill out the form in their Google Classroom to suggest their ideal gift card.

Q4 W2--Week of April 19, 2021

Daily Lessons

I am creating Google Slides for each lesson to create a daily routine for our class and to help us maintain time management. Some slideshows will be posted on Google Classroom; some will not. Some slideshows will be required to be completed for a grade; some will be for reference. You will be notified on your class page and on Google Classroom when an assignment has been posted to complete for a grade. As you can see, each lesson consists of five parts. All five parts are essential, so you must be present and on time for each class.
 
1. Welcome/Warm-Up:
  • Daily check-in
  • Social-emotional activity
  • Learning target(s)
  • Lesson vocabulary
  • Mini-Lesson
2. Student Practice:
  • You try to complete at least one problem on your own.
  • This is where productive struggle comes into play. I want to see how well you persevere in using problem-solving skills. I also want to see what you already know how to do regarding this learning target.
3. Guided Practice:
  • We complete a problem together. 
4. Independent Practice:
  • I will present a problem (usually a test-type question) for you to solve. I will share one or two answers (anonymously) for the class to discuss what were the strengths of the strategy used and what needs to be improved. The discussion will use the terms in the learning target and the lesson vocabulary list.
  • I may also present one way to solve the problem.
5. Wrap Up/Exit Ticket:
  • You will complete a self-reflection about how well you understand the lesson's learning targets. 
  • Then you will complete an Exit Ticket to see if you have mastered the lesson's learning targets.
 

Daily Schedule Class Information Template

I highly suggest you use this template to create a central location for all information regarding your classes (times, teachers, meeting links, etc.). I have already entered the information for math class as an example.
