Course Description

Amplify CKLA is our reading curriculum chosen by Phoenix Community Learning Center.  Amplify CKLA is based on a whole group/small group daily participation plan. Whole group learning opportunities occur daily with the introduction of key focus points.  The students will then practice these key focus points during the week independently and in small groups while guided reading groups take place with the teacher.  Independent/small group practice will include fluency, spelling, phonics, and phonemic awareness skills.

 

Amplify CKLA also cross teaches into our science and social studies curriculum with the addition of appropriate topics and real photographs.

Lesson 2- 1492: A Year That Changed the World

Today we will determine the main idea of “1492: A Year That Changed the World” and recount the key details using the 5 Ws (who, what, where, when, why),  answer questions about navigation in the Age of Exploration and explain how explorers kept track of where they were going by explicitly referring to the text, use linking words for example to connect reasons and to connect ideas with categories of information, and use a glossary to determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and phrases.

Lesson 3- Columbus and the Conquistadors

Today we will categorize and organize facts about the explorations of Christopher Columbus, closely read “Navigation in the Age of Exploration” and determine the meaning of words and phrases relevant to navigation, identify and use the meaning of prefixes pro– and anti–, and use linking words in conclusion to connect reasons and to connect ideas with categories of information.
