5TH Grade Math Assignments

Instructor
Mr. Kyle Moe
Term
2019-2020 School Year
Department
Math
Description
5th grade students will be be using MyMath. MyMath empowers me to teach math while engaging every student, develop a classroom of critical thinkers, make math relevant, rigorous, and possible for every student. Students have ebooks and online classrooms where they will complete homework, quizzes, test and can access videos to refer back to for practice. We will also use an online program called ALEKS. ALEKS allows me to fill in gaps for all students as well as create continuous practice for grade level standards. In addition we will be suing Study Island as an additional learning and practice resource. Study Island allows students to work at their own pace, and revisit topics at any time for review.

Class Expectations:

Come to class prepared and on time every day.

Follow directions the first time given.

Respect the rights and property of those around you.

If at any time you need to contact me, you may feel free to reach me at kmoe@phoenixclc.org.

Assignment

Good morning class,

Today you will be focusing on subtracting mixed numbers. Some problems will require renaming.

Learning Target: I can use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.

The following video will be very helpful, but remember to review the earlier videos if you need to.

This video explains how to find equivalent fractions a little better, so it may be worthwhile to watch too.

Once you have viewed the video on subtracting mixed numbers (and any of the others that you find useful) you will need to complete Lesson 9.13 on ALEKS.
Remember that you can message me in ALEKS for help if you need it. I really would like to hear from all of you, even if you don't need any help with the lessons.

Take care,
Mr, Moe

Due:

Assignment

Good morning,

Today you will be adding and subtracting mixed numbers again, but without renaming them.
Review yesterday's videos and your lesson report for 9.11, then complete Lesson 9.12 in ALEKS.

Due:

Assignment

Good morning class,

I hope that you've had a chance to get outside for a bit and enjoy the sunny weather (even though it's been chilly).
Today you will be using models fo fractions to write mixed numbers and improper fractions.

Learning Target:  I can explore adding mixed numbers using models.

In each problem you will see a series of figures that have been divided into equal sections, and have some sections that are shaded. Each figure represents one whole, and each shaded portion is one equal part of that whole.

See the example in the attached file.

The following website has a good explanation of how the models relate to the math.

Help with Fractions is another great website that may help you better understand how to work with fractions.

And the following video may be of use too.

The assignment is Lesson 9.10 in ALEKS, and should be fairly easy to complete. If you have questions or need help please don't hesitate to contact me.

Take care,
Mr. Moe

Due:

Mr. Moe

Due:

Assignment

Good morning, and welcome to Friday.

Today you will be subtracting like fractions, including solving real-world problems with like fractions.
Some problems will require you to simplify your answer, so begin by viewing the following video to refresh your memory about how to do that.

You should also review the video from yesterday.

Then complete lesson 9.3 in ALEKS.
I don't anticipate that you'll have much difficulty with this lesson, but if you do don't hesitate to message me.

Be good to each other.
Mr. Moe

Due:

Assignment

Good morning,

Today you will begin learning how to add and subtract fractions that have the same denominator.

Learning Target: I can add like fractions and solve word problems involving the addition of like fractions.

Begin by watching the following video.

Keep in mind the the method shown only works when the fractions have the same denominator.

Following the video you will then complete Lesson 9.2 in ALEKS

Feel free to message me through ALEKS if you have any questions or need help.

Stay safe,
Mr, Moe.

Due:

Assignment

Good morning again class,

Today you will begin chapter 9, where you will learn how to add and subtract with fractions.
The first lesson is a review of how to determine where a fraction lies on a number line.

Learning Target: I can place a given fraction on a number line and write the correct fraction when given a point on a number line.

Begin by watching the following video:

Then complete Lesson 9.1 on ALEKS.

On Friday there will be a packet available at Phoenix. If you know someone in class that does not have internet access at home, please pass the word on that packets are available.

I hope that you are all still doing well, and are taking care of yourself and your families.

Mr. Moe

Due:

Assignment

Good morning,

Today you will begin to review Chapter 8.
I have added a lesson on Study Island that I think will give a better visual representation of how fractions are division problems.
Please look at that, as well as the videos that I shared earlier.

There is a Chapter 8 Review assignment on ALEKS that you will need to complete by Thursday evening.
Please message me on ALEKS if you need any help.

Take care,
Mr. Moe

Due:

Assignment

Good mooring again,

I hope that your weekend was restful and that your families are well.
Today you will be converting fractions into decimals.

Learning Target: I can use fraction equivalence to write fractions as decimals. 5.NF5.b

Begin by watching the following  videos.

Keep in mind that we have already done division with decimal numbers, so this shouldn't be a huge leap to turn a fraction into a division problem and solve that to find the decimal number. Just remember that the denominator (bottom number of a fraction) is what you divide the numerator (top number) by.

Then Work on Lesson 8.8 in ALEKS

This is the last lesson in Chapter 8, and I'm going to give you two days to complete it before we review. There will be a chapter test this Friday.
Please message me on ALEKS if you need anything.

Due:

Assignment

Good morning,

Then complete Lesson 8.3 in ALEKS.

Please use the ALEXS message center if you need any help.

Due:

Assignment

Welcome back to school after Spring Break. This is certainly going to be different for all of us, so please be patient with each-other as we all learn how to learn from home.

I am going to keep things simple as far as assignments go. I know that you all probably will have people to care for while we can't be at the school, so I'm going to be more lenient with due dates, and reduce the workload as much as I can. Starting today there will not be a daily quiz. I will however have a short weekly quiz each Monday starting next week.

This week I will be assigning things daily, but later on I may set things up for the whole week all at once.

For Monday March 23rd:

5th grade will continue chapter 8, working on Lesson 8.2, finding the greatest common factor (GCF) of three numbers. Begin by looking at the video at Kahn Academy (download the word attachment for the link).

If you need help please use the messaging feature in ALEKS. I may have you use email later, but for now I'd like to keep all communication in one place
